2010 Festivals
Below are the festivals we are considering this season.
- Vancouver: False Creek Spring Regatta: May 15. 1 day festival.
- Vancouver: Rio Tinto Alcan: June 19-20.
- Whistler: Canadian Nationals: July 2-4.
- Greater Vernon Dragon Boat Festival: July 24-25. CANCELLED.
- Penticton Dragon Boat Festival: Sept. 10-12.
Canadian Nationals - Whistler, BC: July 2-4. 2 day festival.
Whistler was a beautiful place to hold the Canadian Nationals. Alta Lake in Rainbow Park was a good venue for the 50 or so teams that attended this important but smaller festival. The weather was windy and very chilly so all paddlers bundled up between races to get warm. Kamloops' Extreme Currents - mixed team and Extreme Fury - women's team attended the Festival Division (12 women's teams and 18 mixed teams) while 20 or so other teams attended the National Division. All teams raced three 200 meter races on Saturday and three 500 meter races on Sunday. Our KDBC teams also participated in the 1,000 meter race at end of day Sat. which was a lot of fun, each team passing a boat at the finish line. We raced well and enjoyed watching the National level teams compete. Precision is the word to use for these top knotch teams. Our ladies won golden hardware taking 1st in the Div. A Championship and the mixed team won 1st in the Div. A Consolation Championship. The weekend was a great experience.

Rio Tinto Alcan: June 19-20. 2 day festival.
Our club sent Extreme Currents - mixed team and Extreme Fury - women's B team to Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver BC this weekend. This festival was well attended by Canadian and US teams and was very competitive. The weather stayed dry, the venue at Science World was very beautiful, lots of venders and the racers village was nicely organized with load speakers around to let racers know when they were being marshalled. Four 500 meter races were ran, 2 on Sat. and 2 on Sun. Our Fury qualified for the 2,000 meter Guts 'n Glory race which they did amazing with only 2 teams passing them along the way on the 1,500 meter stretch, those being False Creek and Pemberton - the top 2 women's teams in the festival. Check out the Guts 'n Glory race on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA5QcYXnYOY
Extreme Fury are boat #1, our jersey's are white and are the third boat around the final corner.
Once again a great festival to attend. Thanks to the organizers.
False Creek Spring Regatta: May 15. 1 day festival.
KDBC sent 2 mixed teams down to Vancouver for a 1-day regatta. This regatta was treated as a practice and the focus was more about performance than result though both were pretty good. Each team entered would race two 200 meter races in the morning and two 500 meter races in the afternoon. There were a few firsts for our club at this regatta; We took down 9 members who were racing in their first dragon boat regatta\festival. Pretty exciting. We also had a new steersman taking his first crack at steering at a festival steering 4 races this day. He did just amazing! Plus we had 2 first time drummers give their lungs a wake up call for one race each. They called loud and strong encouraging their team down the race course doing a super job. Everyone who raced gave it their all. We enjoyed sunny weather and mild breezes throughout the day.
There was a variety of talented teams at this regatta ranging from recreational teams to world class teams. KDBC teams that attended were; Extreme Currents-Mixed with 12 men and 8 women and Fighting Fury-Mixed with 2 men and 18 women. We also entered a women's race at the end of the day with a full contingent of ladies.
Thanks to FCRCC and their volunteers for putting on this event. It was a good experience for our first race of 2010.
